Electric cars aren’t cheap. Even as the market for EVs has expanded, prices have oly went up — but Volvo’s EX30 electric SUV aims to break the price barrier, offering electric propulsion at a starting price just shy of $35,000. The entry-level price comes with equally entry-level specs, although in this case, that’s the point. Available in single-motor RWD or dual-motor AWD, both models have the same 69kWh battery with DC fast charging capability, giving a 0-80% charge time of 26.5 minutes. Range for the single-motor is 275 miles, with 265 miles for the dual-motor, with final EPA ratings likely clocking in somewhat lower. The AWD version boasts a 0-60 time of 3.4 seconds, making it Volvo’s fastest-accelerating car ever. In terms of size, the EX30 is slightly smaller than the Tesla Model Y, with a few feet more cargo room. The lower price point means that the compact SUV won’t get sensors like object-avoiding LIDAR, but does feature safety tech like Park Assist Pilot and alarms that alert you to passing cyclists and pedestrians while opening doors — a nod to the urban commuter the EX30 is aimed at. The EX30 will enter production in late 2023 with deliveries starting in 2024.
