Apple AR Glasses to Enter Second Phase of Prototype Design [Report]
Apple’s AR glasses are about to enter the second phase of prototype design, according to a new report from DigiTimes.
The site says the glasses have not met Apple’s expectations for weight and battery life. Supply chain sources believe that production will start in the first quarter of 2022 at the earliest.
Apple’s attitude towards AR glasses development continues its cautious style, preferring to be slow, but also to build closer to its ideal state. Its AR glasses design has been changed and changed again, after many prototype design cycles, and now it finally enters the second stage of prototype Design, the industry estimates that if all goes well, this stage will be completed after the lunar new year to the end of February, and then the third stage of prototype design will be entered.
Once prototyping has been complete, there is an engineering verification stage that will take another 6-9 months.
Apple’s glasses design will purportedly use the same battery type as the AirPods Pro, allowing for a wireless design. However, the built-in battery poses weight problems that could make the glasses difficult to wear for long periods of time. Typical glasses weight around 30 grams and Apple is reportedly trying to get the weight of its AR glasses to less than 80 grams. The glasses also contain processors and Apple must address accompanying heat dissipation requirements.
