Airlines Are Experiencing Mysterious GPS Attacks Over The Middle East

There’s a new threat to airline safety that’s much more insidious than a passenger going to the bathroom barefoot. Airlines are reporting GPS-based spoofing attacks that blind navigation systems and disable backup navigation systems, leaving pilots completely blind, Vice reports.

Over the last five weeks, at least 50 incidents have been reported, mostly centered around three cities — Baghdad, Cairo and Tel Aviv. One plane reportedly came close to crossing into Iranian airspace as a result of the spoofed GPS signals it was receiving. Since the first attack, the methods used have only gotten more sophisticated, and, at least for now, no one knows how to stop or prevent them.

According to OPSGROUP, an international organization made up of pilots and flight technicians, the attacks target the Inertial Reference System that planes use to figure out where they are. In a statement on the attacks, OPSGROUP said:

This immediately sounds unthinkable. The IRS (Inertial Reference System) should be a standalone system, unable to be spoofed. The idea that we could lose all on-board nav capability, and have to ask [air traffic control] for our position and request a heading, makes little sense at first glance— especially for state of the art aircraft with the latest avionics. However, multiple reports confirm that this has happened.

To make things even more complicated, it’s unlikely that these spoofing attacks are the work of a single organization or government. A researcher at the University of Texas at Austin was recently able to locate the source of one spoofing attack in Iran and later located another in Israel.

“The strong and persistent spoofing we’re seeing over Israel since around October 15 is almost certainly being carried out by Israel itself,” UT Austin professor Todd Humphreys told Vice. “The IDF effectively admitted as much to a reporter with Haartz.”

2025 Genesis GV80 SUV Goes Fastback With The New GV80 Coupe

Published

on

When Genesis showed off the GV80 Coupe Concept, it seemed like the SUV was close to production. That turned out to be the case when Genesis said it was making the GV80 Coupe, and confirmed it would be taking the model through production mostly unchanged. Now that it’s getting a refresh for the next model year, the 2025 Genesis GV80 SUV is getting a stablemate with the GV80 Coupe, which will have similar design to smaller SUVs in the lineup, such as the GV70.

The Genesis GV80 is getting the sloping lines and sporty vibe of its siblings but is retaining the major components of the previous GV80 model, albeit with mild updates. The 2025 GV80 SUV will be powered by either a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline four that makes 300 horsepower, or a 3.5-liter twin turbo V6 making 375 HP. The engines are reportedly getting a boost of five to four horsepower each, according to Car And Driver but Genesis has yet to confirm.

The 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe will have the option for an even more powerful engine than the GV80 SUV, which stacks an 48V electric supercharger on the 3.5-liter twin turbo V6, increasing output to 409 HP. That’s the same engine as that of the Genesis GV90.

So, you get G90 power in the body of a sportier SUV, which Genesis insists on calling a coupe. That can be a little confusing for those that associate the term with two-door vehicles, but the GV80 Coupe is not a two-door SUV. It has four doors; it just has different design than the GV80 SUV. It’s more of a fastback than traditional coupe, with what’s supposed to be a sleeker profile. It also has a wide, menacing stance and rides on either 20- or 22-inch wheels. That’s huge!

The rear cargo area of the GV80 Coupe is truncated relative to the GV80 SUV, with a design that slopes downward to make it appear more athletic. It wants to look faster than the SUV, and, in all fairness, it is faster. But a sloping roofline does not a coupe make. That honor should be reserved for two door vehicles, which are less popular now in the age of the crossover — for better or worse.

The 2025 GV80 SUV and Coupe make up for the misnomer in other ways, mainly their luxurious cabins. The interior is getting a facelift more dramatic than the exterior changes. The cabin gets a 27-inch OLED center screen that reaches to the driver’s side. In keeping with the theme of the wheels, it’s also huge. The HVAC controls are touch-based, which isn’t ideal, but this is a luxury SUV, after all. The accents keep on with things like the “cyrstal-like” shifter.

Of course, the GV80 Coupe will get neither the carbon fiber racing seats nor rear strut tower brace of the concept, but the production model still looks most of the way there to the vehicle that first introduced the new design. Genesis hasn’t specified pricing yet, saying the price will be announced closer to release in 2024.

Senator Challenges Teamster To Fight Due To ‘Oklahoma Values’

Published

Oklahoma, time to come get your boy, Senator Markwayne Mullin. After challenging the president of America’s largest union to a fight during a senate hearing Tuesday, Mullin went on Fox News to say he had no choice but to act like an 8th grader on recess, because, Oklahoma.

Yes, Oklahoma, where male fragility apparently comes whipping through the plains, you asked for this behavior from your senator, apparently.

The Daily Beast lifted Mullin’s comments out of Sean Hannity’s show, so we don’t have to wade through that mess for the goods (bless them):

Speaking about the incident with Mullin on Fox News on Tuesday night, Sean Hannity praised Mullin’s actions, saying any other response would have been “gutless.” Mullin agreed, then said: “What did people want me to do? If I didn’t do that, people in Oklahoma would be pretty upset at me.” He added: “I’m supposed to represent Oklahoma values.”

Considering the Oklahoma state mottos is Labor omnia vincit, or for the Latin-challenged among you, labor conquers all, I’d be concerned about relying on your Oklahoma bona fides to carry you through in a fight against Teamsters President Sean O’Brien.

The two men nearly had themselves a donnybrook in the middle of a hearing about trying to make Americans’ lives better over some shitty tweets O’Brien posted mocking Mullin. Basic trolling that both a senator and the leader of one of the largest unions in America should really be above, but here we are.

Incredibly, this wasn’t the only near physical altercation in congress this week. Rep. Tim Burchett accused former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy of “elbowing” him in the kidneys, ABC News reports — a charge McCarthy denies.
